NAM EARTHQUAKES: The future of Groningen

Printed below is an English translation of information published today by Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij BV (NAM), a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil each owning a 50% share in the company responsible for the earthquake blighted Groningen Gas Field and consequential potential bill for untold billions in damages to effected residences.

Sometimes demolition is the only option for safety reasons…

Together in debate about the preservation of Groningen

At a meeting of the Noorderpers Society on 19 February, NAM spokesperson Hein Dek, at the request of the organization, debated with Annemarie Heite, Marco Glastra (Het Groninger Landschap), DvhN-journalist Maaike Wind and ‘Middelstum activists’ Marko Datema and Mariska The long. Subject: what does the future of Groningen look like?

NAM’s presence during the debate was greatly appreciated. Dek contended with the idea that NAM wants to demolish all purchased buildings, as recently in ‘t Zandt: “Sometimes demolition is the only option for safety reasons, but it is not our goal. In ‘t Zandt the village was already in agreement with new plans of the municipality for that location. ”

The future of Groningen

All those present agreed that there is an important role for the inhabitants when it comes to the future of Groningen: how do they see the future of their living environment? Marco Glastra: “Characteristic buildings must be retained, but there is now also a chance to add an appropriate and qualitatively good building layer to Groningen.”

Communication

Of course, it also dealt with the 6,000 old claims that NAM still has to deal with. There was also criticism of the difficult way in which NAM sometimes communicates with Groningers. Deck appealed to this: “It should not be the case that there is no communication with NAM. When people report to us, for whatever reason, we are able to speak them professionally. You can keep that promise to me. ”

Meetings with journalists about MRP Groningen

National and regional media were briefed at the NAM office in Assen during three meetings about NAM’s Measurement and Regulation Protocol. There were journalists from the FD, Trouw, De Telegraaf, RTV Noord and Dagblad van het Noorden. Follow sessions with other media.

Under the supervision of Jan van Elk (head of research NAM) and Taco den Bezemer, the spiritual father of the Groningen Measurement and Control Protocol (MRP Groningen), the journalists were included in the latest Hazard and Risk Assessment, the MRP and the accompanying dashboard on NAM.nl

Van Elk: “The MRP Groningen was approved in 2017 by the SSM supervisor and the Ministry of Economic Affairs. After the quake at Zeerijp from 3.4 on 8 January, the interest in the report and the dashboard increased considerably. We are happy with that. We see that the MRP works. The conversation about seismicity and its consequences for people’s safety experience is therefore given more depth. ”

An explanation of the Hazard and Risk Assessment proves useful in this respect, says Den Bezemer: “This properly technical report shows in English the latest state of scientific research on seismicity and its consequences for Groningen. The MRP Groningen is a good practical addition to this. I already see in articles about earthquakes that the sessions have helped. ‘
