Which is the authentic MOSOP Organisation?

By John Donovan

According to Wikipedia “The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, also known as (MOSOP), is a mass‐based social movement organization of the indigenous Ogoni people.” Legborsi Saro Pyagbara is named as being the President of Mosop in November 2014.

In a press statement issued in the name of The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) on 1 May 2019, Legborsi Pyagbara is named as being the President of MOSOP.

In a press statement issued in the name of The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) on the same day, 1 May 2019, Fegalo Nsuke is named as being the President of MOSOP.

Each MOSOP has a different President and a different website.

Both seem to be anti-Shell in outlook.

From an email I received on 2 May 2019 from the Fegalo Nsuke version of MOSOP, it is safe to say that it is hostile towards the Legborsi Pyagbara MOSOP.

EMAILED EXTRACTS

What has happened in MOSOP is the unfortunate infiltration of the organization by the government and Shell.

Pyagbara came into office on January 1, 2013 and was reelected in December 2015 for a second tenure of 3years which expired on December 31, 2018.

Normally, elections are conducted as a term come to an end but Pyagbara failed to conduct elections.

As provided for in our constitution, in the absence of Pyagbara, the then deputy president, Dr. Fortune Chujor called a Central Committee meeting and set up an electoral committee which conducted the Elections that led to the emergence of Price Fegalo Nsuke as president. He defeated Mr. Lazarus Tamana who still coordinates MOSOP in Europe from London.

The situation now is a battle between a people based MOSOP and Pyagbara’s government-backed false claim to the MOSOP leadership.

EXTRACTS END

The confusion and hostility must undermine the Ogoni cause and the reputation of MOSOP.  What a mess when duelling statements are issued on the same date about the same subject.

If the Legborsi Pyagbara led MOSOP would like to supply a comment for publication, it will be added here.

In the meantime, printed below are competing statements dated 1 May 2019 about the Kiobel v Shell decision in the Dutch court on 1 May:

Statement issued by MOSOP President Legborsi Pyagbara on 1 May 2019

Below is a press statement issued by UNPO Member the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) on the matter:

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) today [1 May 2019], received the court ruling against Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, with deep feeling of excitement, though, not surprised.

MOSOP believes justice can only be delayed but not denied, following the series of evidence that abound and facts that can never be totally supressed.

We commend the various efforts by individuals, groups and institutions in support of this course for justice and also salute the unstoppable determination of the great Ogoni women and spouses of our late and unforgettable heroes of our struggle, Esther Kiobel, Victoria Bera, Blessing Eawo and Charity Levula, as well as the unbiased position of the Court in the matter.

It is our conviction that time is running out on Shell and her collaborators in perpetrating and covering up injustice in Ogoniland.

Speaking on this latest ruling, the MOSOP President, Comrade Legborsi Pyagbara, says Shell will definitely pay for the killings and other rights abuses and crimes it committed in Ogoniland during its reckless operations in the area.

Comrade Pyagbara said he is very optimistic that the ruling from the Dutch Court is “a key step towards expanding the frontiers of justice and making perpetrators of crime to realise that they can be held accountable even on their own soil”. He called on the direct plaintiffs and the entire Ogoni people, as well as supporters of the struggle for justice all over the world to keep hope alive and remain resolute.

The District Court of The Hague today, May 1, 2019, issued an interim ruling in the case brought by the women with regard to Shell’s involvement in the unlawful arrest, detention and execution of their husbands, the Ogoni heroes, by the Nigerian military.

It ruled in favour of the plaintiffs, that the court does have jurisdiction over the case and that this should not be time barred.

The court also ruled that Shell should hand over some confidential internal documents to the plaintiffs’ lawyers, and that they would have the opportunity to examine witnesses.

No doubt, this decision of the Court serves as an encouragement and important precedent for other victims around the world, who are seeking to hold powerful multi- Nationals responsible for injustice and who struggle to access justice.

Statement issued by MOSOP President Fegalo Nsuke on 1 May 2019

Fegalo Nsuke: President, MOSOP

On behalf of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), I write to sincerely convey our joy and solidarity with the families of our heroes who were executed by the Nigerian government and Shell in 1995.

Today’s (May 1, 2019) decision of the Dutch Court in assuming jurisdiction to determine whether Royal Dutch Shell was complicit in the Nigerian government’s execution of the Ogoni nine brings hope to us and the over one million Ogoni people around the world that Shell and the Nigerian Government itself will someday be made to account for the killing of thousands of Ogonis in Nigeria.

The 1995 hangings had been one of the most traumatic experiences of the Ogoni people. Ever since, the Nigerian Government and Shell have battled to suppress our people and subject us into submission through military repression, attempting to use every means available to force the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland as if all is well.

Today’s judgment opens a window of hope and sends a clear message to dictators, inhuman and discriminatory systems such as is the case of the Ogoni people in Nigeria that justice may be delayed but will never be denied.

We are assured by this ruling that our world will not be completely silent in the face of gross human rights abuses committed by multinationals like Shell Petroleum especially when they perceive their victims to be ignorant and will conclude that corporate irresponsibility will never be questioned.

We are confident that not only will Shell’s day come but Nigeria itself will sooner than later be called to question over her dirty wars against the Ogoni people, the 1995 hangings and the thousands of Ogonis killed by its military with support from Shell.

We congratulate the families of the Ogoni nine for their courage and will only hope that this case will, for the first time, expose to the world the inhumanity of Shell and the Nigerian Government over a well planned and executed genocide in Nigeria against the Ogoni people.

Signed:

Fegalo Nsuke
