By Ron Bousso. 30 Sept 2020
LONDON (Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell announced on Wednesday plans to cut up to 9,000 jobs, or over 10% of its workforce, as part of a major overhaul to shift the oil and gas giant to low-carbon energy.
Shell, which had 83,000 employees at the end of 2019, said that the reorganisation will lead to additional annual savings of around $2 billion to $2.5 billion by 2022, going partly beyond cuts of $3 to $4 billion announced earlier this year.read more
Shell has announced plans for between 7,000 – 9,000 job cuts from its global workforce by the end of 2022.
The energy giant, which has been grappling with the effects of the oil price downturn and Covid-19, follows rival BP who earlier this year announced plans for 10,000 job cuts.
Shell, which employs 6,000 people in the UK, including 1,000 directly in its Upstream oil and gas business in the country, said the “reduced organisational complexity” will save between $2billion – $2.5billion by 2022 on an annual basis.read more
Shell to cut up to 9,000 jobs as oil demand slumps
30 Sept 2020
Royal Dutch Shell has said it plans to cut 7,000 to 9,000 jobs as it responds to challenges including the slump in oil demand amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The oil giant said the cuts would be implemented by 2022 and included 1,500 people who were taking voluntary redundancy.
It gave no indication of where the job losses would happen.
Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden said the job cuts were “the right thing to do for the future of the company” as it strives to become a net-zero emissions energy business.read more
Royal Dutch Shell is preparing to cut thousands of jobs as it nears the conclusion of a global restructuring review designed to position it for the green energy transition.
The Anglo-Dutch oil group could set out the scale of the job losses as soon as tomorrow, when it is expected to issue a trading update ahead of third-quarter results next month.
The update is likely to drive fears that hundreds of roles will be cut in the UK, where about 6,500 of Shell’s 83,000 global staff are based.read more
