U.S. Utilities Could Face Slew Of Climate Lawsuits

U.S. Utilities Could Face Slew Of Climate Lawsuits

Several years ago, a major US electric utility, wrote in its 10-K , a document filed annually with federal securities regulators, that it could not “currently estimate the financial impact of climate policies… or litigation alleging …” damages, but admitted they could require “material capital…” (FirstEnergy, 2018 10-K. Fast forward to the 2020 document, FirstEnergy said it could not predict “timing and ultimate outcome..” of environmental actions. Not much progress.) Was that cautionary verbiage a hint? (Not being forthcoming in documents like the 10-K carries significant legal penalties, so take it seriously.) read more

Will climate change send the Royal Dutch Shell share price to zero?

The Motley Fool

Rupert Hargreaves | Saturday, 14th August, 2021

Extracts:

The Royal Dutch Shell (LSE: RDSB) share price used to be a staple holding for income investors. That was until the company cut its dividend last year for the first time since the Second World War.

Volatile oil prices have always been a risk for the enterprise. In the past, the group’s size and diversification has helped it manage this uncertainty. However, I think the threat of climate change now presents an even more considerable risk for the company and one that could jeopardise its very existence. read more

Shell to pay $110M to settle Nigeria oil spill lawsuit – Bloomberg

Aug. 11, 2021 4:25 PM ETRoyal Dutch Shell plc (RDS.A)RDS.BBy: Carl SurranSA News Editor

Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) agrees to pay $110M to a Nigerian community for a “full and final satisfaction” of a long-running dispute over an oil spill that happened more than 50 years ago.

The company will pay the Ejama-Ebubu people 45.7B naira ($110.9M) in compensation to put an end to a legal case that began in 1991, the community’s lawyer reportedly tells Bloomberg.

In 2010, a Nigerian court ordered Shell to pay 17B naira to the community, which the company unsuccessfully challenged several times; in March 2020, a judge in a related court case said that Shell’s debt with interest accrued had run up to 183B naira, which the company also contested. read more

Aug. 10, 2021, 10:50 PM

Shell Oil Company has agreed to pay $29.5 million towards ongoing cleanup costs at the McColl Superfund Site in Fullerton, Calif., according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The cost recovery settlement will go towards cleaning up waste and contaminated groundwater at the site, a disposal area for petroleum refinery waste contaminated with benzene, metals, and a volatile chemical known as tetrahydrothiophene, according to a federal consent decree. A federal court earlier found Shell liable for the cleanup as one of the parties responsible for the contamination. read more

Shell pays $111m over 1970s oil spill in Nigeria

Wed, 11 August 2021

Oil giant Shell will pay a Nigerian community $111m (£80m) over an oil spill more than 50 years ago.

A spokesman said the payment would mark the “full and final settlement” to the Ejama-Ebubu community over a spill during the 1967-70 Biafran War.

The company has maintained that the damage was caused by third parties.

A Nigerian court fined Shell the equivalent of $41.36m in 2010, but the company launched a number of unsuccessful appeals.

Last year, the country’s Supreme Court said that, with interest, the fine owed by the company was more than ten times greater than the original judgement, although Shell denied this. The case was launched in 1991. read more

Big Oil wants to keep drilling in the North Sea. The backlash is growing

London (CNN Business)The UK government has been warned to stop a massive North Sea oil project or see its hopes of becoming a climate leader dashed as the country prepares to host a crucial environmental summit later this year.

In the coming weeks, Britain’s oil regulator could decide whether to green-light the Cambo development near the Shetland Islands, which co-owners Shell (RDSA) and Blackstone-backed Siccar Point Energy expect to produce 164 million barrels of crude during the first phase of development. But environmental groups and other activists are furious. FULL ARTICLE

They do not honour cashbacks.

If you join Shell Energy through a cash back website. Shell Energy will not honour the cash back. You will have to make an official complaint, and then have many, many phone calls before they will eventually honour the cashback.

This is what I had to do. Now my father has joined Shell Energy through Quidco back in March. It is now August and Shell Energy still hasn’t paid Quidco the Cashback. So looks like the same hassle above is going to have to happen again. But my Dad is in his 70’s so I’ll need to get him to give me permission to deal with it. read more
