Third Point demands energy giant place oil operations into a separate business after taking £545m stake

Shell has come under attack from a Wall Street raider demanding a break-up of the oil and gas giant after taking a stake worth about $750m (£545m).

Dan Loeb’s Third Point said it had been “a difficult two decades” for shareholders in the FTSE 100 company, which it claimed was now torn between conflicting interests over climate change.

He believed Shell should put its oil and refining operations into a separate business focused on returning cash to shareholders.

One of world’s biggest pension funds to stop investing in fossil fuels

Daniel Boffey in Brussels: Tue 26 Oct 2021 16.08 BST

One of the world’s largest pension funds, ABP, is selling its €15bn-worth of holdings in fossil fuel companies, including Royal Dutch Shell, claiming it had been unable to persuade the sector to transition quickly enough towards decarbonisation.

Corien Wortmann-Kool, the chair of ABP, the Dutch pension fund for civil servants and teachers, said it would no longer invest in producers of oil, gas and coal, and that it would dispense with its current investments in those sectors by the first quarter of 2023. read more

NAM to be broken up and sold off, as Dutch gas production ends

27 Oct 2021

The Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) set up in 1947 by Shell and Esso, is being dismantled, ending 75 years of Dutch gas extraction.

The company, which is now 50% owned by Shell and 50% by ExxonMobil, is being chopped into four separate limited companies which will be sold off, including all its Dutch oil and gas interests, apart from the Groningen field which is being wound down.

The Groningen field, which has generated hundreds of billions of euros for the treasury, will close next year and the other fields, on both land and sea, are being sold off – probably to foreign investors. read more

‘Activist’ Billionaire hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb buys $500m stake in Royal Dutch Shell and demand it splits in two to focus on renewable energy

  • Billionaire hedge fund manager Daniel Loeb, head of Third Point LLC, has acquired $500million in shares of Royal Dutch Shell PLC
  • In a letter obtained by The Wall Street Journal the firm has demanded that the oil major to separate into two separate entities
  • One would include Shell’s legacy businesses and provide steady cash flow while the other would house renewables and other units needing more investment
  • Third Point’s suggestions come after Exxon shareholders elected a third director nominated by activist hedge fund Engine No 1 to the energy company’s board
  • Alexander Karsner, a senior Google strategist, joins environmental scientist Kaisa Hietala and former Andeavor CEO Gregory Goff on the 12-person board

A billionaire hedge fund manager has acquired a large stake in Royal Dutch Shell PLC and is demanding that the oil major to separate into two separate companies.

Daniel Loeb’s Third Point LLC is pushing for the separation to attract new investors and hold on to current ones as many have sold their shares over concerns that Shell is not environmentally friendly.

According to The Wall Street Journal the activist hedge fund’s stake in Shell is worth more than $500million and is one of Shell’s largest investors. read more

Shell Broadband is really really bad

Sorry to say

Sorry to say, the broadband is really, really bad. Keeps dropping out have to keep re entering password, locked into a contract.

AVOID AVOID AVOID do not use this…

AVOID AVOID AVOID do not use this company to supply your broadband, we got up this morning to find that we had no broadband service. Having spent around 2 hours on the phone to Shell Broadband to try and get to the bottom of the problem. They say that we have been switched to a new supplier, when I asked who had authorised this switch they couldn’t give me an answer. It certainly wasn’t us…..Furthermore they have also informed us that we will now have to wait for 2 weeks to be reconnected. We have not received any communication from them with regards to this spurious disconnection.
We have the receipt for our account which has been maintained throughout the contact. As we are working from home we now find that we have no broadband access, when I asked for compensation for mobile data, I was told that I would have to fund the extra cost, and that they would look at this disconnection at their leisure. Even though mobile data isn’t really a workable option. We have been given the two fingered salute by this completely incompetent broadband provider.
When will Ofcom start to do the job that they are meant to be doing and dealing with these companies in a robust manner.
I asked to speak with a manager regarding this disconnection and was informed that I will receive a call back within 24 hours. Meanwhile we intend to switch supplier. But it would appear that they are all cowboys. Where are OFCOM.I will keep this post updated. read more

Horrendous customer service from Shell Energy

The content below is sourced from current customer reviews of Shell Energy published on Trustpilot.

These reviews must be fake

These reviews must be fake, I was told last week that it would be 48 hours to get a phonecall regarding getting a smart meter install, I’ve not heard anything. I’m unable to complete a booking online and I have not had a phonecall like promised.

May change my review rating once I get a good service, not off to a good start.

Update: now changed to a 1 star review! Horrendous customer service! Still no call so I phoned and the agent creates a ticket for me, I got an email reply from the smart meter team asking me a load of questions wanting to know what time I set my alarm in the morning, what have I got for my lunch, how many times do I brush my teeth, etc. read more

Groningen gas damage is a national crisis, says ombudsman in new report

Groningen gas damage is a national crisis, says ombudsman in new report

The new government needs a minister with specific responsibility for sorting out compensation for people whose property has been damaged by the Groningen earthquakes, according to national ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen.

The situation in Groningen, where thousands of homes have been damaged by quakes caused by natural gas extraction, is so acute it can be described as a national crisis, Van Zutphen said in Trouw.

The ombudsman said too little had been done with his recommendations from 2017. Thousands of people, he said, are still waiting for compensation or help with making their houses safe. They have been sent from pillar to post and this ‘vicious circle’ needs to be broken. read more

WITH the start of the COP26 climate conference now just days away…

Shell executives will probably prefer to dwell on Shell’s notable if slightly eyebrow-raising inclusion in a book just published by Jane Goodall, called The Book of Hope: A survival guide for an endangered planet.

In it, Goodall, the English primatologist and anthropologist, tells the story of Ben van Beurden, chief executive of the Royal Dutch Shell oil group, who it is claimed decided to support the 2015 Paris climate agreement because his 10-year-old daughter asked if it was true his company was destroying the planet. read more

Shell likely to miss own emission reduction goals, shareholder group says

Oct. 22, 2021 12:32 PM ETRoyal Dutch Shell plc (RDS.A)RDS.BBy: Carl SurranSA News Editor

  • Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.ARDS.B) is on track to miss its own emission reduction targets in the coming decades, according to a new analysis by Global Climate Insights.
  • Shell’s energy transition strategy “is still materially driven by fuels that will increase emissions, producing a growth strategy that will not truly align with a decarbonizing world,” the study says, as reported by Bloomberg.
  • The research casts doubt on Shell’s own climate goals as well as its ability to comply with a landmark Dutch court order earlier this year to cut emissions 45% by 2030 from 2019 levels.
  • Shell already had pledged to cut GHG emissions by 20% by 2030 and to net-zero by 2050, but GCI says the company will not meet the target established by the court ruling “and will instead increase net emissions by 4.4%.”
  • If Shell is to align with the 2015 Paris Agreement’s goals of keeping global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius, it needs to pursue growth beyond gas more aggressively, according to the report.
  • Seeking Alpha contributor Portfolio Navigator says the focus of Shell’s management on rapidly growing the dividend is “a boon for investors.”
