Germany ‘putting citizens at risk by extra gas order from Groningen field

The Netherlands has sharply rebuked Germany for ordering extra gas from a vast Dutch field that was supposed to be shut down because extraction has caused a series of earthquakes.

Stef Blok, the outgoing Dutch economy minister, said he was “seriously concerned” about the unexpected additional strain on the Groningen field, which could further destabilise the region’s geology.

The local government has threatened to sue over the decision and one MP in the provincial parliament said the German order was a threat to the population’s safety.

The dispute is the latest case of political discord between Germany and its neighbours stemming from the country’s growing dependence on natural gas.
