Shell CEO in first changes combines LNG, upstream operations

LONDON (Reuters) -Shell will combine its oil and gas production and liquefied natural gas (LNG) divisions as part of CEO Wael Sawan’s first changes since taking charge of the energy giant earlier this month.

The new division, which combines Shell’s most profitable operations, will be headed by current upstream director Zoe Yujnovich, Shell said in a statement on Monday.

Sawan took office on Jan. 1 after heading Shell’s integrated gas division, which included Shell’s LNG and renewables businesses, with a vow to simplify and improve the company’s operations.

Under the internal restructure, renewables operations will be combined with Shell’s oil refining and marketing operations led by current downstream director Huibert Vigeveno, the company said. read more

Shell Nearly Sold Its Norwegian Oil And Gas Assets In Late 2022

By Tsvetana Paraskova – Jan 10, 2023, 8:00 AM CST

Shell held talks last year with the biggest UK North Sea producer Harbour Energy to sell its oil and gas fields offshore Norway and some mature assets offshore the UK, but a deal ultimately couldn’t be reached due to price volatility, company sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

Shell, as well as other majors, have worked in recent years on streamlining asset portfolios to focus on the most profitable projects. Back in 2021, Shell said that its oil production peaked in 2019 and is set for a continual decline over the next three decades as it looks toward the renewables side of the business. Shell said its carbon dioxide emissions also likely peaked—a year earlier, in 2018. read more

The company has to start paying for its share of the climate damage oil and gas have caused around the world. It certainly has the funds

OPINION By Areeba Hamid

As we welcome in a new year, Shell welcomes its new CEO, Wael Sawan.

Coming from Shell’s alternative energy division, Sawan’s appointment has already sparked speculation that this could mark a departure from the era of predecessor Ben van Beurden who presided over – among other things – Shell’s ignominious departure from the Alaskan Arctic, its first dividend cut since the Second World War and a loss in a landmark climate court case in the Netherlands. The company was also recently the focus of an documentary exposé and stinging spoof from comedian Joe Lycett.

Sawan steps up at an interesting time for the fossil fuel industry.

While households up and down the UK freeze, and struggle to put food on the table, Shell has made the most of tax breaks to avoid paying any windfall tax whatsoever. It’s even milked £100m from taxpayers. And instead of investing profits back into clean, cheap renewable power which could alleviate bills and shore up UK energy security, Shell has funnelled billions of that extra cash back into shareholder pockets in the form of buybacks. read more

Shell to pay £1.7bn in UK and EU windfall taxes

It comes after bosses at the London-listed oil giant said in October they had not paid any UK windfall taxes due to heavy investment in the North Sea.

Windfall tax payments are to cost Shell around $2bn (£1.7bn), the oil and gas company has revealed.

The cost of the UK’s energy profits levy and the EU’s recently announced solidarity contribution will reach $2bn (£1.7bn) in the final three months of its financial year, the firm said in a fourth quarter 2022 update. read more

Meet Shell’s New CEO

by Andreas Exarheas Rigzone Staff Tuesday, January 03, 2023

Wael Sawan has officially become Shell’s new chief executive officer, succeeding Ben van Beurden, who had held the post since January 1, 2014.

In an in-house interview posted on Shell’s website, which asked the new company head how he felt about taking on the challenge of being Shell CEO, Sawan said he was “incredibly excited”.

“But, I have to admit, also sometimes daunted by the huge challenges that are out there. I take comfort in the fact that we do have a strong strategy. We do have brilliant people,” he added in the interview. read more

I was written off in my 40s, says outgoing Shell boss Ben van Beurden: Oil industry titan is having the last laugh

  • Ben van Beurden says his stellar career was almost derailed two decades ago

  • He was told that he did not have what it took to get to the top

He is one of the most powerful business leaders on the planet, with a pay package of £6million in 2021.

But, in a candid admission that will strike a chord with anyone who feels their talents are overlooked at work, Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden says his stellar career was almost derailed two decades ago.

The Dutch oilman says that when he was in his 40s he was told at an assessment centre for leadership training that he did not have what it took to get to the top. read more

Avoid Shell Energy! They are an appallingly bad company

Con Artists – Avoid!

Avoid Shell Energy! They are an appallingly bad company. They took over as our energy supplier over a year ago and still haven’t refunded the money they owe us (i expect this is the case for many of their other customers). They couldn’t care less about their customers, rude and unhelpful customer services staff (when you eventually do get through) We’ve wasted hours and hours of our time chasing the money they owe us only to be fobbed off every time, absolutely terrible, avoid at all costs, there are plenty of other energy suppliers available, see all the other bad reviews online of Shell and you will see that this is not an isolated instance! Disgusting behaviour from a company that made £10 billion in profits in the last quarter alone but refuses to refund £300 that they owe. It’s incredible that companies like this are allowed to get away with it. read more

The Sunday Times Business Person of the Year 2022: The shortlist

The Sunday Times

In a year buffeted by war, falling markets and government upheaval, we present the shortlist for the business person who has stood out above the rest

Ben van Beurden, Shell

The Dutchman will call time on a 40-year career at Shell in 2023, having spent nine years in the hot seat. He gambled early in his tenure on the £36 billion takeover of gas giant BG Group, relocated Shell’s head office to London, and cut its dividend when the oil price tanked during Covid. But the company has surged this year on the back of higher oil prices stoked by the Ukraine war. Van Beurden, 64, leaves Shell in a fitter state and with plans to embrace green energy — read more

Shell CEO Confident on Long-Term LNG Demand

Shell CEO Confident on Long-Term LNG Demand

Shell Plc remains confident on the long-term outlook for LNG demand, especially in Europe, despite recent supply constraints, the company’s CEO Ben van Beurden and CFO Sinead Gorman concurred during a virtual webcast with various media outlets.

Shell’s LNG trading and optimization was “impacted by a combination of seasonality and supply constraints, where the business is geared towards supplying the northern hemisphere during the winter,” the company revealed in its third-quarter results.

Van Beurden continues to see LNG as a long-term growth segment with typical growth of 4% per annum and thinks the figure could be higher given higher energy consumption in Europe. In parallel with higher energy demand, the company has boosted its positioning in LNG in projects in Qatar from the North Field South and North Field East developments to Mexico, the executive said. read more

Financial Times: BP and Shell’s divergent tax bills highlight UK windfall flaws

David Sheppard: 1 Nov 2022

Shell’s outgoing chief executive Ben van Beurden is adamant that oil and gas companies have to “embrace” the idea of paying more tax during the energy crisis to support society’s most vulnerable. But the message did not appear to have reached the accountants at Shell’s UK arm in time for the company’s most recent results.

Avoid at all costs. What a disgrace of a company…

Avoid at all costs. What a disgrace of a company, we were sold this wifi as part of a deal when buying appliances from Currys. The cheapest in our post-code apparently, and feeling pressured on the spot that this was the fastest wifi in our area we stupidly agreed to shells wifi. 3 times in 7 weeks we have had to have an engineer out to “sort” the same reoccurring issue. Wifi works fine for a few days and then gets cut off down to nothing, takes over and hour to speak to somebody from customer service just to be told that you need to restart the router..lol. Very unprofessional to also be told “can you not ask a neighbor to use their wifi?” Because i work from home. First of all we pay to have our own working wifi and secondly who in the right mind even says that to a customer who should be getting what they pay for!! Awaiting for complaints team to get in touch so I can cancel and start with a better much more professional provider where i hopefully wont have to worry about my wifi being cut off an hour before i have to deliver a presentation! If i could rate them 0 stars i would. read more

Shell chief to receive compensation for loss of office

THE HERALD

Shell chief to receive compensation for loss of office

THE outgoing chief executive of oil and gas giant Shell is to receive a year’s salary by way of compensation for loss of office.

Ben van Beurden will receive £1.42 million when he steps down at the end of this year, which is to be paid in six instalments. Shell said outstanding payments will be reduced by 50 per cent if he secures a paid position, excluding non-executive directorships, in that time.

The company also said that Mr van Beurden will continue to receive his base salary until the end June next year. The London-listed Anglo-Dutch energy giant said that a pro-rated annual bonus in relation to performance year 2023 will be determined by Shell’s remuneration committee after June next year.

It said 50% of any bonus awarded will be delivered in shares which are subject to a three-year holding period that remains in force after Mr van Beurden leaves Shell’s service.

Shell said the 2021 and 2022 long term incentive awards will be reduced to reflect the portion of the performance period that has elapsed to June next year. read more
