Bully-boy tactics

Ask Shelldon: Why is it that Shell does not sue John Donovan for libel?

Q: Why is it that Shell does not sue John Donovan for libel over his postings on royaldutchshellplc.com?

Shell’s reluctance to sue John Donovan for libel over his website, which is a veritable treasure trove of criticism aimed at the oil giant, can be traced back to a few key considerations that make the legal landscape as murky as a North Sea oil spill.

First, Shell has recognized that launching a defamation lawsuit against individuals, especially in the wake of the infamous “McLibel” case, could backfire spectacularly. Even if they were to win, the company risks being perceived as a corporate bully taking on David and Goliath. The negative publicity from such a case might outweigh any potential benefits, as it would likely draw even more attention to the very allegations Shell seeks to silence. read more

Shell Shocked: Climate Protestors Scrub the Greenwash Off Aberdeen Office

Posted by John Donovan: 10 June 2024

In a twist of poetic justice, climate activists took to Shell’s Aberdeen office with a literal washing machine and bath to “clean up” the company’s act. Early Monday morning, Extinction Rebellion Scotland showed up outside Union Street with a banner demanding that Shell stop its “greenwashing and destructive climate policies.”

Because nothing says “we care about the environment” quite like spewing out misleading ads and backpedalling on climate commitments, right Shell?

Shell’s grandstanding on its so-called green initiatives has been exposed by advertising standards bodies in both the UK and the Netherlands for—you guessed it—misleading green campaigns. Shocker!

According to Extinction Rebellion (XR), Shell’s notorious past is riddled with climate misinformation, denial, human rights abuses, and pollution. In true Shell fashion, they’re now backtracking on previously announced carbon reduction targets. read more

Article by Von Sven Felix Kellerhoff

Leitender Redakteur Geschichte

How brown was the “Napoleon of the oil business” really?

Some considered Henri Deterding to be the “most powerful man in the world” in the 1920s. As a convinced anti-Bolshevik, he became involved with Hitler and paid with the permanent loss of his reputation. Historian Jochen Thies traces the life of the long-time Shell boss. read more

Is it wise for Reuters to accept content sponsorship from Shell?

Posted by John Donovan: 9 March 24

I have always been impressed with the diligence and integrity of Reuters the news agency. That applies to everyone at Reuters with whom I have had contact in the last two decades.

I have supplied Reuters with information from Shell sources used in relation to many Reuters news articles about Shell.

Here is one such article:

Shell critic says oil major targeting his website

US Supreme Court Snubs Shell’s ‘Timeout’ Request in Coastal Caper

Posted by John Donovan: 9 November 2023

In the latest episode of ‘Oil Titans vs. The World’, the US Supreme Court, in its majestic indifference, has denied a pause to the legal theatrics of BP Plc and Shell Plc units. These plucky underdogs were just asking for a little breather before a Louisiana trial that could see them forking over billions for their alleged role in a coastal vanishing act.

It seems that the companies, in a display of courtroom gymnastics, tried to vault the case out of Cameron Parish, arguing that a fair trial there would be as elusive as an honest emissions report. Their plea? That every local juror is too personally and financially intertwined in the coastal loss saga to judge the case without bias. The audacity of the community for being affected by the issue at hand! read more

Clariant Rejects Shell’s Billion-Dollar Ethylene Damages Claim But Is Facing A Ruthless Adversary

By John Donovan: 19 October 2023

In yet another thrilling episode of corporate battles, Clariant has boldly rejected Shell’s claim for damages.

Clariant, the Swiss chemicals company, has made it perfectly clear that they reject Shell’s claim. Shell had the nerve to bring a claim against Clariant and three other companies in the district court of Amsterdam, alleging damages of up to a billion euros.

Clariant, however, swiftly fired back with an impeccable argument: “Shell was not a supplier of ethylene to Clariant, and Clariant has substantiated economic evidence that the conduct of the parties did not produce any effect on the market.” Bravo, Clariant, for showing such outstanding resolve in the face of these allegations! read more

Hasn’t worked properly from the get go and it’s hard to contact customer service as they give you the usual “go online and let the chatbots or help options see to your needs” rubbish. How can I go online when my internet isn’t working? Basic logic fault. Whether it’s the router or exchange problems god alone knows as the Qube guy couldn’t fix it.
I’ve had no reliable connection since I switched provider to Shell. Nearly 2 weeks now. I’m disabled and need a decent service to stay connected. I wish I’d stayed with my previous provider now. At least when I had power cuts the router would reconnect automatically. I’m frustrated and disgusted. read more

Shell force-fitted more than 4,000 prepayment meters in the UK last year as the international oil and gas giant made more than £32bn in profits.

The firm on Wednesday posted additional profits of almost £7.7bn in the first quarter of this year amid soaring oil and gas prices

.It was reported in February that Shell’s overall profits had soared to £32.2bn last year – the highest in the oil and gas giant’s 115-year history – as millions of Britons struggled to pay their energy bills. read more

Stay clear! I moved over from Virgin Media and had absolute terrible broadband speed from the get go. It was an absolute nightmare to get in touch with support.
First I tried the phone, just to wait ages in a holding loop to then having the line suddenly interrupted when I was finally talking with someone.
Then I tried email and nobody answered for a week. And even then it was a very slow back and forth with them not taking it serious.
Finally reached someone on the phone, just to be told it must be the WiFi router and I should reset it and connect it to another outlet. And after I’ve done that, I had to wait again for hours to talk to someone.
I then tried to cancel as it was an absolute nightmare, and they just outright rejected it. Months later after the communications ombudsman, finally someone came out and fixed it. Speed is now perfect, but too late, because I had to extend Virgin Media as the Shell line wasn’t working. read more

Disgusting company and inept customer service

Phoned 1 week ago in regards to faulty gas meter and told new one installed 2 months away. New estimated bill is 5 times higher than highest usage on any month over last 12months. Phoned to query, transferred 6 times due to customer service not being able to transfer to relevant department. Promised an email confirming what we spoke of but nothing received and also customer service adviser refused to escalate call as she was clearly not understanding my enquiry. Shocking service! read more

Unbelievably bad. Have spoken to 7 different Shell, so called ‘customer advices, people. They have been polite but obviously make it up as they go along. They pretend they are referring to my notes but have no record of anything. Have waited ,in 2 whole days for engineers I was told would come, either AM or PM and would text me to confirm time. They didn’t come or text. I am being charged for a service I am not receiving. I have wasted hours phoning or waiting for Open Reach. I am under contract and want terminate but apparently can’t, or have to pay a severence fee. That is so wrong. Can Shell do this, arn’t they regulated. Are they as bad as energy providers as they are at telecoms? read more

Do not use this company originally with the Post Office but went with Shell when they took over. Broadband speed was way to slow and unreliable. Customer service is a joke and finally moved supplier. Asked to return ancient router or would be charged £35. Returned Router with letter and proof of postage. 2 month later and various phone calls to tell them the router had been returned they still wanted the £35 paid . They then forwarded the disputed debt to MIL debt collection agency without notice. Avoid with a barge pole a horrible company read more

“Appalling!! Was with post office, brilliant but they sold out to Shell. Wish I had left then. Just moved home and as stuck on contract decided to stay with Shell, huge mistake!!!  No Internet, no service at all. Complete shambles of a company. Avoid at all costs. Complaints are totally ignored. Rude staff on phone and emails ignored. Government should pull plug on them as Broadband provider.”

Disgusting treatment of 86 year old by Shell Energy: DO NOT GET THEIR BROADBAND

1 0 Dec 2022

DO NOT GET THEIR BROADBAND!!

DO NOT GET THEIR BROADBAND!!
My mother-in-law, 84 yrs old, was switched to Shell Energy via the Post Office a couple of years ago, without consultation. She’s never received a paper bill, never set up an online account and had 1 initial letter which she forgot all about..
Having early memory loss issues & a service outrageously slow, she thought her laptop had broken.. @£32 per mth (!!)
We switched companies, providing notification & she’s literally received dozens of threatening emails since, demanding money for a router they didn’t provide, termination fees for a contract she never signed and attempts to access a final bill I already paid.. I’ve called many times, explained the circumstances-they said they would stop.
This is harassment of an elderly woman, shame on you. read more
