AMSTERDAM/LONDON, Jan 13 (Reuters) – The Dutch wing of environmental group Friends of the Earth, which won a landmark court victory against Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L) last year, is targeting 30 major corporate emitters in a campaign launched on Thursday.

Milieudefensie has set its sights on large companies with legal bases in the Netherlands, where a court ruled in May that Shell must reduce its environmental footprint. read more read more

Outrage as Shell announces ‘nauseating’ $5.5billion payout to shareholders amid cost of living crisis

FUEL giant and energy firm Shell has come under fire from experts for announcing a $5.5billion pay out to shareholders amid a growing cost of living crisis.

It comes as record wholesale gas prices and supply chain issues have put household finances under pressure, pushing up energy bills and petrol costs.

It means households have been plunged into a cost of living crisis in recent months – but Shell’s shareholders are set for a $5.5billion pay day. read more

Shell’s Prelude gas vessel faced ‘catastrophic failure’ from power outage

Peter Milne By Peter Milne

Power problems on Shell’s giant Prelude gas vessel in December with almost 300 workers on board risked the “catastrophic failure” of parts of the ship’s structure, according to a report by the offshore safety regulator.

While the crew off the WA coast battled in tropical heat without air conditioning or ventilation to restore power, the steel spine of the vessel was cooling towards a point where it could have lost the strength to support the 80,000 tonnes of gas processing equipment on top of the 488 metre-long vessel. read more

Lawsuit Seeking Shell Oil Climate Documents

CLF Files Motion Seeking Shell Oil Climate Documents

By ecoRI News staff:

PROVIDENCE — The Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) recently filed a motion in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island to force London-based Shell Oil to turn over records regarding the multinational oil and gas company’s knowledge of climate and severe weather risks as part of an ongoing lawsuit.

CLF has claimed in court proceedings that Shell’s Providence facility, which sits along the city’s waterfront, is unprepared for climate risks such as flooding and extreme weather. The 75-acre property and ethanol railcar terminal on Allens Avenue with 25 petroleum storage tanks sits in a flood zone and discharges petroleum and toxic chemicals into the Providence River via stormwater runoff. read more

Lawyer who defeated Shell predicts ‘avalanche’ of climate cases

Financial Times: Tom Wilson in London: 29 Dec 2021

Seven months after his landmark victory against Royal Dutch Shell, Roger Cox has never been busier.

Little known outside his native Netherlands, Cox is probably the world’s most successful climate litigator. His win against Shell in May, when a judge in The Hague ordered the Anglo-Dutch energy supermajor to cut its carbon emissions by 45 per cent by 2030, rippled around the world.

He is now preparing to respond to Shell’s appeal next year, petitioning the Belgian government to comply with another of his court victories and consulting on half a dozen climate cases in other countries. read more

Shell gets OK to proceed with offshore wind project off New England

Shell gets OK to proceed with offshore wind project off New England

A joint offshore wind venture spearheaded by Royal Dutch Shell and Ocean Winds North America has gained approval to build more offshore wind turbines off the New England coast that is expected to generate 400 megawatts.

The new turbines, part of the Mayflower project, will provide energy to Massachusetts’ three largest utilities. The energy produced by the newly approved turbines can generate enough electricity to power more than a half-million homes and businesses each day, Shell officials said in a statement.

Shell and OW have combined on two other offshore wind projects, approved in 2019, expected to produce 804 megawatts of power. read more

Scientists protest at museum’s Shell link

Elisabeth Perlman: Monday December 27 2021, 12.01am, The Times Two researchers have shunned the Science Museum over its links to the fossil fuel industry and will donate their work to a rival institution instead.

Steve and Deonie Allen, who are pioneers of charting and detecting microplastics in the environment, hope to hand over material from their expeditions to the Natural History Museum.

After the Allens found out about a gagging clause in the Science Museum’s agreement with Shell to sponsor a climate change exhibition, preventing it from “damaging the goodwill or reputation” of the oil giant, they decided to withdraw their involvement.

The couple had been due to give their artefacts to the Science Museum last month. The items included a paraglider they were flying when they first detected microplastics in the air and… read more

The last six months or so have been uncharacteristically bruising for oil and gas company Royal Dutch Shell, at least as far as its public profile is concerned. Not only did a court in The Netherlands rule in May that it must cut its global carbon emissions by 45% by the end of 2030 compared with 2019 levels, but then in August the Dutch advertising watchdog concluded that the company should abandon its campaign promoting “carbon neutral” driving. In late October the UK’s Channel 4 broadcast “Joe Lycett vs the Oil Giant”, which included the British comedian impersonating Shell’s CEO Ben van Beurden and defecating out of his mouth, and then the very next day journalists from SourceMaterialGreenpeace’s Unearthed team and Bloomberg published investigations into the “Drive Carbon Neutral” campaign. read more

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – On the day that shareholders of Royal Dutch Shell PLC voted to move the company’s headquarters to London from The Hague, the company sent a letter to the Dutch prime minister to soften the blow.

Signed by Shell CEO Ben van Beurden, the letter said Shell’s departure had been “a difficult message for us to announce,” given the company had more than a century of history.

But the letter to Prime Minister Mark Rutte outlined the many projects and activities Shell will continue in the Netherlands, including retaining 8,500 employees, and the division-level management of Shell’s upstream (production), renewable energy and projects & technology divisions. read more

Op-Ed: Will Shell’s oil future outlast its ocean namesakes?

CYNTHIA BARNETT

When Royal Dutch Shell’s new chairman, Andrew Mackenzie, asks shareholders on Friday for their vote to move the global oil giant’s headquarters from the Netherlands to Britain and drop the “Royal Dutch,” he will also be asking to return the company home.

In a history better suited to fairy tales than the financial pages, Shell rose from a small seashell shop in the East End of London. In the 1830s, a Jewish curio seller named Marcus Samuel began importing tropical seashells from the Far East. His shop sold “small Shells for Ladies’ work,” along with large, shining specimens such as conchs and nautiluses for still-life drawing. read more

Cambo: Jobs warning as Shell pulls out of oil field development

Energy companies’ reputational struggles and Whitehall’s green ambitions leave oil investment in limbo  and 4 December 2021

It was less than a month ago that Kwasi Kwarteng was celebrating Shell’s plans to move its group headquarters out of Holland and to the UK.

The business secretary heralded the decision as “a clear vote of confidence in the British economy as we work to strengthen competitiveness, attract investment and create jobs”.

Today he may have more complex feelings towards the FTSE 100 oil giant – and greater uncertainty about the challenges ahead for the economy. read more

Shell’s decision to abandon Cambo oil field does nothing to aid the transition to green energy

Sky’s Ian King argues that environmental campaigners and other critics have scored an own goal by opposing the project and will only force us to buy in more energy from abroad.

: Business presenter : Friday 3 December 2021

Shell’s decision not to proceed with its interest in the Cambo oil field may not necessarily be the triumph for environmental campaigners that they seem to think.

It does not, for example, guarantee that Cambo’s oil – some 170 million barrels worth over 25 years – will stay in the ground. read more
