Britain’s wealthy energy companies are now part of the problem
Bosses’ fanatical devotion to showering shareholders with cash has done little to help their own cause as household bills soar
Shell is still on course to return “$30bn to shareholders this year, or more than 15pc of its market cap”. These are truly astonishing sums in any context but set against a backdrop of sharp increases in fuel poverty, they are in danger of looking obscene.
Europe lurched closer to an energy crisis on Tuesday after the Kremlin cut off gas supplies to major buyers including Shell.
Russia’s state-owned gas supplier, Gazprom, said supplies to Shell in Germany as well as to Ørsted in Denmark will be cut off on Wednesday after they refused to bow to Putin’s demands to pay in roubles.read more

The FTSE 100 company said it wanted the Jackdaw field, about 250km east of Aberdeen, to start operating by 2025. read more

Oil and gas trade body drops ‘oil and gas’ from its name
By Matt Oliver: 31 January 2022 • 4:20pm
The trade group that represents UK oil and gas companies is dropping the words “oil and gas” from its name to reflect the ongoing rise of green energy.
Oil and Gas UK will be renamed Offshore Energies UK from February 14, the body said on Monday.
It follows a year-long strategic review by the group, which said the change reflects “the evolving nature of the industry”.
OGUK said its members, which include BP, British Gas owner Centrica, Shell and Chevron approved the name change in December.read more
The FTSE 100 oil behemoth said earnings from its gas division will be “significantly higher” in the fourth quarter of its financial year than during the previous three-month period.
Shell has a large portfolio of gas that is pumped through pipelines or carried on cargo ships in its liquefied form. However, its trading fell short in the third quarter because of production problems in several locations.
The company said it had overcome these issues, allowing it to benefit from a huge rally in which natural gas prices more than tripled in 2021.read more
