Thousands of Groningen gas opponents demand earthquake damage compensation

SUNDAY, JANUARY 16, 2022

An estimated eight to ten thousand people in Groningen took part in a torchlight procession against gas extraction in the province. The municipality was satisfied with the protest, which drew attention to the people living in the earthquake area.

The protest was organized in response to the Cabinet’s decision to double gas production. Protesters were also upset at the poor organization of subsidies for homeowners to strengthen their homes and make them more sustainable. read more

Dutch Cabinet increases funding for Groningen earthquake victims after chaos

January 15, 2022

The cabinet has agreed to allocate an extra €250m to improve homes in parts of Groningen affected by earthquakes after the initial €220m fund ran dry on the first day following a flood of applications.

Long queues formed in towns and villages in the northern province on Monday at council offices where people could claim up to €10,000 per household for renovations.

Hans Vijlbrief, the junior minister charged with sorting out the Groningen gas problems, told MPs on Friday that the new allocation of cash will allow everyone entitled to the grant to make a claim. read more

Germany ‘putting citizens at risk by extra gas order from Groningen field

Oliver Moody, Berlin | Bruno Waterfield, Brussels The Times

The Netherlands has sharply rebuked Germany for ordering extra gas from a vast Dutch field that was supposed to be shut down because extraction has caused a series of earthquakes.

Stef Blok, the outgoing Dutch economy minister, said he was “seriously concerned” about the unexpected additional strain on the Groningen field, which could further destabilise the region’s geology.

The local government has threatened to sue over the decision and one MP in the provincial parliament said the German order was a threat to the population’s safety. read more

Shell Proposes Shift to Britain, Dropping ‘Royal Dutch’ From Name

The restructuring is meant to make the company more appealing to investors and make it easier to sell assets, the oil giant said.

: Nov. 15, 2021, 6:02 a.m. ET

Shell, Europe’s largest energy company, said Monday that it was proposing to move its headquarters to Britain from the Netherlands and make major changes in its share ownership and tax status.

The moves are designed to make the company, whose share price has lagged rivals, more appealing to investors, and they come less than a month after an activist investor, Daniel Loeb, suggested changes to the company’s structure. They are likely to be seen as a blow to the Netherlands, where Shell has an enormous presence, and a windfall for the British government as it struggles to demonstrate that Brexit can provide an economic boost. read more

Groningen gas damage is a national crisis, says ombudsman in new report

Groningen gas damage is a national crisis, says ombudsman in new report

The new government needs a minister with specific responsibility for sorting out compensation for people whose property has been damaged by the Groningen earthquakes, according to national ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen.

The situation in Groningen, where thousands of homes have been damaged by quakes caused by natural gas extraction, is so acute it can be described as a national crisis, Van Zutphen said in Trouw.

The ombudsman said too little had been done with his recommendations from 2017. Thousands of people, he said, are still waiting for compensation or help with making their houses safe. They have been sent from pillar to post and this ‘vicious circle’ needs to be broken. read more

More than 1,000 quakes of up to 3.6 on the Richter scale have hit the province since 1986

Oct 5, 2021: Three minor earthquakes hit the province of Groningen on Monday, as the ground continues to settle following the extraction of billions of cubic metres of natural gas.

The production of Groningen gas is currently being wound down because of the problems… More than 1,000 quakes of up to 3.6 on the Richter scale have hit the province since 1986.

80% of the homes in this village are being demolished

So far, 126,356 reports of damage caused by the quakes have been made to an official government institute set up to process claims. Up to now, €1.15bn has been allocated to home owners and others to pay for damage. read more

Groningen gas: 80% of the homes in this village are being demolished

June 14, 2021 – By Pierre Felcenloben

In Groningen, work is continuing to clear up the damage caused by extracting millions of cubic metres of gas from under the province. For the residents of the village of Overschild, this means demolishing and rebuilding almost every building.

Thousands of people have been affected by damage to their homes due to subsidence in the region, which sits above Europe’s largest gas field and has been exploited by NAM, a joint venture set up by Shell and Esso, since 1963. read more

NAM director apologizes for controversial statements on reinforcement project

SATURDAY, MAY 15, 2021 – 13:05 NAM director apologizes for controversial statements on reinforcement project

Director of the Dutch gas concern (NAM), Jan Atema, said he regrets the statements he made about the reinforcement operation in the Groningen earthquake area. The operation was set to reinforce homes that were damaged due to fracking in the earthquake zone in Groningen.

NAM will also continue to pay for the reinforcement of homes, although a majority of the costs as covered by the state.

The Dutch gas concern claimed it has scaled down on its production in Groningen compared to previous years. “We only produce a fraction of what we used to. What happens then is that you get less risk, fewer earthquakes and, therefore, less risk of collapse”, the director said. read more

NAM says criteria for damage claims in Groningen quake zone are ‘too strict’

April 1, 2021

The company in charge of gas extraction in Groningen is disputing thousands of claims for damages by homeowners because it says the government’s criteria are too strict.

The NAM, a joint venture set up by Shell and Esso in 1947 to exploit the Netherlands’ natural resources, said the risk to safety had been exaggerated ‘by a factor of one to ten thousand’ in some cases.

It said the vibration limits used to assess if damage to homes was the result of earthquakes were too low and also queried the costs of processing the claims. read more

Nam calls for Groningen gas field closure in 2022

Nam calls for Groningen gas field closure in 2022

31 JULY 2020

The Netherlands’ Groningen low-calorie gas field could be closed completely in 2022, while keeping it on stand-by afterwards would require substantial production to be maintained, operator Nam has said.

There will be “no role for Groningen after 2022” as it is highly unlikely that it would be needed to guarantee security of supply then, Nam said in response to a consultation on the field’s draft output plan for the 2020-21 gas year.

The Dutch economy ministry’s plan foresees that Groningen output would halt from about mid-2022 when a new quality conversion facility in Zuidbroek is expected to become operational, significantly increasing the scope to convert high-calorie gas into low-calorie supply. The field is to remain on stand-by afterwards until at least about mid-2025 to serve as a back-up that could help meet northwest European low-calorie demand in situations of exceptionally strong consumption or disruptions to other sources of supply. read more

Energy venture NAM says it does not want to use Groningen gas field in 2022

AMSTERDAM, July 30 (Reuters) – NAM, a venture of Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil that operates gas fields in the Netherlands, said on Thursday it did not want to use the Groningen gas field in 2022 and had asked the government to approve this.

The government, which has been ordering production cuts at the field due to seismic risks in the region, had asked NAM to keep the field available as a resource in 2022 in case of a cold snap, NAM said, adding that it was opposing this request. read more

THIRD EARTHQUAKE IN A WEEK HITS GRONINGEN PROVINCE

The third small earthquake in a week struck the province of Groningen early Sunday morning. The quake registered a magnitude of 2.3, and its epicenter was in Startenhuizen, meteorological agency KNMI said.

It struck seconds before 4:08 a.m., and was followed by an aftershock registering 0.9 about four minutes later, data from the agency showed. The earthquake was determined to be induced by human activity, a fairly common occurrence in the region due to decades of natural gas extraction. read more
