It’s a new year and Shell has a new boss, but the same old greed just won’t cut it

The company has to start paying for its share of the climate damage oil and gas have caused around the world. It certainly has the funds

OPINION By Areeba Hamid

As we welcome in a new year, Shell welcomes its new CEO, Wael Sawan.

Coming from Shell’s alternative energy division, Sawan’s appointment has already sparked speculation that this could mark a departure from the era of predecessor Ben van Beurden who presided over – among other things – Shell’s ignominious departure from the Alaskan Arctic, its first dividend cut since the Second World War and a loss in a landmark climate court case in the Netherlands. The company was also recently the focus of an documentary exposé and stinging spoof from comedian Joe Lycett.

Sawan steps up at an interesting time for the fossil fuel industry.

While households up and down the UK freeze, and struggle to put food on the table, Shell has made the most of tax breaks to avoid paying any windfall tax whatsoever. It’s even milked £100m from taxpayers. And instead of investing profits back into clean, cheap renewable power which could alleviate bills and shore up UK energy security, Shell has funnelled billions of that extra cash back into shareholder pockets in the form of buybacks. read more

Did Joe Lycett Slay the Oil Giant Shell in its Anglo-Dutch Form?

By John Donovan

Following the airing of a Channel 4 TV documentary Joe Lycett vs the Oil Giant on 24th October 2021, seismic changes have taken place at Royal Dutch Shell.

Based on the timing of the chain of events, it appears that the documentary may have contributed to the decision to bring a sudden end to the oil giant in its Anglo-Dutch form, under which it operated for over a hundred years.

Joe’s controversial impersonation of Royal Dutch Shell CEO Ben van Beurden including Ben shown literally talking shit about the green energy transition was cringe-making but made an impact. read more

Shell’s arch critic John Donovan has secured the website domain name for Shell PLC

The shellplc.website will become operational in January to coincide with the implementation of the new name for Royal Dutch Shell Plc: Shell PLC.

Shell has dropped the Dutch Royal Family link and ditched the Dutch part of the former Anglo-Dutch multinational company, which will now be solely a British company with its HQ solely in London, paying UK taxes.

The Royal Dutch Shell Group self-evidently was not well disposed to the taxes imposed by the Dutch left-wing government or its support for climate change policies and parties suing Shell.  read more

The last six months or so have been uncharacteristically bruising for oil and gas company Royal Dutch Shell, at least as far as its public profile is concerned. Not only did a court in The Netherlands rule in May that it must cut its global carbon emissions by 45% by the end of 2030 compared with 2019 levels, but then in August the Dutch advertising watchdog concluded that the company should abandon its campaign promoting “carbon neutral” driving. In late October the UK’s Channel 4 broadcast “Joe Lycett vs the Oil Giant”, which included the British comedian impersonating Shell’s CEO Ben van Beurden and defecating out of his mouth, and then the very next day journalists from SourceMaterialGreenpeace’s Unearthed team and Bloomberg published investigations into the “Drive Carbon Neutral” campaign. read more

There is clearly malicious intent.

According to Jetpack Monitoring, a bombardment of almost 50,000 *total blocked brute force attacks were made on the website Shell Nazi History .com in the last month. See Jetpack screenshot below.

We can only speculate on who might have the motive and any prior form to take such sinister action against a non-commercial entirely free to use highly informative website? The site includes undisputed evidence from Shell’s own files, that Shell’s support for the Nazis resulted in the deaths of Shell employees. read more

A warning to Shell’s new No1 Enemy, Dan Loeb

By John Donovan

Last Sunday I was described in the Channel 4 TV documentary Joe Lycett vs The Oil Giant as Shell’s No1 Enemy and as Shell’s nightmare. (Transcript of the relevant segment)

Within days I seem to have lost both titles to a billionaire upstart, Daniel Loeb, who seems intent on breaking up Shell.

From my unique perspective on Shell senior management over recent decades, he is right to question competence and direction.

How has Shell ended up with a foe (me) operating a website using the top-level domain name royaldutchshellplc.com and as a consequence dealing on Shell’s behalf with job applications and all manner of other email correspondence meant for Shell? This is the humiliating situation Shell has been in since 2005. Evidently, no one at Shell has had the gumption to do anything to put an end to such a farce. read more
