When Shell Met BP – A Love Story Fueled by Oil, Lies, and a $120 Million Fine

“And speaking of Shell’s finest: enter Simon Henry, Shell’s former CFO and now newly appointed BP board member. A man intimately connected to the hydrocarbon reserves scandal.”

Ah, Shell and BP. Britain’s answer to “Which fossil-fueled supervillain do you prefer?” Now there’s murmuring that Shell—the world’s leading oil-slicked PR machine and gold-medal winner in the Deadliest Workplace Olympics—might consider buying BP, its slightly less polished cousin. It’s like Dracula pondering whether to adopt Frankenstein.

But before we get too sentimental, let’s remember what Shell brings to the table:

  • A glorious history of employee care, like handing Dutch staff over to the Nazis during WWII, and later using workers as test subjects for carcinogenic chemicals. Experimental cruelty disguised as corporate efficiency.
  • A North Sea platform scandal so outrageous it could be a Monty Python sketch, were it not for the dead offshore workers. Lifeboats were reportedly unseaworthy, and Shell’s internal policy was colloquially dubbed “Touch Fuck All.” Charming.
  • The 2004 reserves scandal, where Shell admitted it had wildly exaggerated its hydrocarbon reserves. Shareholders were shocked. The SEC fined Shell $120 million, which the company could pay using just one of its greenwashing budgets.
  • Nigeria, where Shell’s legacy is so soaked in blood, corruption, and environmental devastation that it makes the Exxon Valdez spill look like a spilt milkshake.
  • Hakluyt, Shell’s in-house intelligence firm. If MI6 and Blackwater had a baby who hated Greenpeace, it’d be Hakluyt. This covert unit reportedly spied on activists, journalists, and anyone else who dared whisper the truth.
  • Let’s not forget Shell’s ties to the apartheid regime, its cameo in the Al-Yamamah BAE oil-for-arms scandal, and its incestuous intelligence links through Hakluyt.
  • And then there’s SPECTRE and SMERSH… oh wait, those are fictional. Shell isn’t. It’s worse.

Investors like BlackRock and Vanguard still happily line their pockets from Shell’s sludge-soaked profits. Because what’s a little ecological genocide when there are dividends to collect? read more

Shell & BP: The Dynamic Duo of Climate Chaos

Shell even reassured us it won’t be buying BP—for at least six months. How noble.

Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Oil, two fossil-fuelled juggernauts stood shoulder to shoulder atop a scorched planet. Their names? Shell and —the Bonnie and Clyde of carbon capitalism, the Gordon Gekkos of global warming. If the Earth had lungs, these two would’ve been chain-smoking them for decades.

And now, just when you thought it couldn’t get more grotesque, we have merger whispers. Shell flirted with the idea of swallowing BP whole, because nothing says “energy transition” quite like an all-British megamerger to keep the fossil flame alive. read more

Shell & BP Sin Syndicate: Pollution, Profits, and Privilege – The Real Energy Transition

What do you get when you cross two oil giants with a fondness for dictatorship-era espionage, apartheid-era diplomacy, and fireballs of carcinogens? You get Shell and BP: the dynamic duo of destruction, the real masters of global transition—transitioning the planet from livable to cooked, one explosive scandal at a time.

Let’s begin with , Britain’s teetering national oil champion, desperately trying to cling to its “independence” like a CEO clings to a bonus while oil rigs burn. With shares down 22% over the last year, BP is now more of a discount bin than a blue-chip. The vultures are circling—US oil giants and even Shell (because nothing says “rescue” like handing the keys to another moral sinkhole). read more

Shell Games: When Explosions, Carcinogens, and Tax Breaks Are Just Business as Usual

By The Fossil-Fuel Files Editorial Team

Stop the presses—but not the pollution. Shell, that gentle guardian of our planet’s health (sarcasm so thick it’s practically a fossil fuel), has once again blessed us with a “minor incident” at its Pennsylvania ethane cracker, because what’s a little benzene and 1,3-butadiene between friends?

On June 4th, at approximately 2:20 p.m., Shell’s Potter Township petrochemical playground went boom. Smoke billowed from furnace unit number five, sending plumes of “nothing to worry about” into the atmosphere. Shell, of course, handled the matter with all the calm precision of a fire brigade at an arsonists’ convention. They evacuated 15 employees, reported one heat-related injury, and called it a day. read more

Shell-Shocked: How a Dutch Court Greenlit More Earthquakes for Gas Profits

In yet another dazzling display of fossil-fuel fanaticism, the Dutch Council of State has officially handed Shell and ExxonMobil’s joint venture—NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij)—a shiny new license to keep shaking the earth for gas in Groningen, because clearly, what’s a few collapsed homes when energy giants need to make their quarterly billions?

Let’s call this what it is: Earthquakes for profit. The most recent 2.1-magnitude quake in Warffum wasn’t enough to raise eyebrows in The Hague, where the judges decided that “the interests of NAM and the Minister of Climate and Green Growth… weigh heavier” than the basic human right not to have your house fall on your head. read more

Shell to Nigeria: Here’s Some Benzene and a Legal Brick Wall. Good Luck!

Oil Giant Faces High Court While Still Dodging Accountability Like It’s a Sport

LONDON, APRIL 2025 — It’s the trial that should make your blood boil (unless it’s already poisoned with benzene, in which case you may want to sue Shell). In a London courtroom lined with empty bookcases—symbolic, perhaps, of Shell’s moral library—two Nigerian communities are fighting for the basic right to drink water that doesn’t cause cancer.

Shell? They’re fighting tooth and nail to avoid handing over documents that might reveal what they knew, when they knew it, and how long they sat on their gold-plated hands while entire ecosystems died in oil-soaked silence. read more

Spills, Spies, and Lies: Shell’s Slick Exit from Nigeria

Wall Street is an invisible partner in Shell’s plunder: happy to enjoy the spoils, deaf to the spoils of war Shell waged on Nigeria’s environment

Cue the confetti: Shell is finally packing its bags after 87 years in Nigeria’s Niger Delta. But before anyone applauds, note that the oil giant is slipping out the back door largely to avoid cleaning up the monumental mess it created, all while still clinging to the profitable parts of the business. In a $2.8 billion “exit” deal announced in January, Shell agreed to sell its onshore Nigerian subsidiary to a local consortium called Renaissance. How noble—except Shell isn’t really riding off into the sunset. The company generously decided to loan the buyers $1.2 billion to help them purchase Shell’s assets and will pony up another $1.3 billion to fund future cleanup and gas projects. Why would an exiting company invest further? Perhaps because those projects conveniently benefit Shell’s remaining 25.6% stake in Nigeria’s gas enterprise. In other words, Shell is getting paid to “leave” while secretly keeping a foot in the door and a hand in the cookie jar. read more

Speaking of the Prince Harry case and Corporate Spying… Let’s Talk About Shell

If you thought NGN was bad, just wait until you hear about Shell’s dirty tricks. While News Corp has been busy hacking phones, Shell has been spying on its own employees, critics  and whistleblowers for decades.

By John Donovan: Posted 22 January 25]

Prince Harry just pulled off what many thought was impossible—forcing one of the most powerful media empires to admit to its illegal, underhanded, and downright disgusting tactics. After a relentless five-year legal battle, News Group Newspapers (NGN) has finally folded, coughing up a full and unequivocal apology for years of unlawful surveillance, phone hacking, and privacy violations that targeted not just the Duke of Sussex, but thousands of others.

And let’s not forget: this is the same media empire that repeatedly lied under oath, destroyed 30 million emails to obstruct justice, and engaged in a massive cover-up to protect its most senior executives, including Rebekah Brooks, who once had the audacity to claim that, “When I was editor of The Sun, we ran a clean ship.” Sure, and now, a decade later, that “clean ship” turns out to have been a full-fledged criminal enterprise. read more

Shell-Shocked: The Sinister World of Surveillance, Spy Games, and Shell’s Shadowy Past

Posted by John Donovan: 23 Dec 24

Ah, Shell, that global paragon of corporate virtue (read: greed), is at it again—reminding the world that profit always comes first, no matter the cost. With a track record as smooth as an oil spill, Shell has managed to combine ruthless ambition, a touch of espionage, and an uncanny ability to slide through controversies unscathed. Let’s dive into the murky depths of corporate surveillance.

A Glimpse into Corporate Espionage

Imagine sitting in a piss-drenched doorway, pretending to be homeless, just to “eyeball” a target across the street. One moment you’re incognito, the next you’re suited up, tailing someone through the City and “ripping” their phone—a polite euphemism for illegally downloading its contents. This isn’t a spy movie; it’s just another day in the life of a private investigator. read more

How the UK Government Bent Over Backwards for the World’s Favorite Polluter (Shell)

Posted by John Donovan: 26 Nov 2024

What happens when a corporate giant that’s been gleefully torching the planet decides to pack its bags and shack up in London? Apparently, a cozy, taxpayer-funded welcome party. Yes, you read that right: Shell, the literal embodiment of climate denial wrapped in PR spin, didn’t just waltz into the UK—it was stage-managed there by a government that treated it like royalty. A cache of emails now reveals the jaw-dropping lengths officials went to in order to kiss Shell’s, uh, fossil-fueled feet. Let’s dive in. read more

Ask Sheldon: What can you reveal about the Shell/MI6 linked spy firm, Hakluyt?

Sheldon

Hi! How can I help you?

Guest (Test):

What can you reveal about the Shell/MI6 linked spy firm, Hakluyt?

Sheldon

Hakluyt & Company, often portrayed as a corporate spy firm, has been linked closely with Shell and its various clandestine operations. Founded by former MI6 officers, Hakluyt has a reputation for operating in the shadows—akin to the secretive world of espionage, but with an added dash of corporate intrigue. Oh, the glamour of it all.

The firm has been alleged to have collaborated closely with Shell, particularly in efforts to undermine and surveil organizations that oppose Shell’s activities, such as environmental NGOs. Notably, it was reported that Shell employed Hakluyt agents, including a serving German Secret Service operative, to conduct undercover operations against various groups protesting Shell’s practices. read more

Shell’s Secret Spy Saga: Like a Bad Spy Movie, But With More Oil and Less Charm

Posted 22 December 2023

Oh, the irony! Shell, the ever-so-discreet and not-at-all-nefarious oil giant has been doing its darnedest to keep a lid on some rather unflattering information. But, like a leaky old barrel of their finest crude, the details just keep seeping out, much to their chagrin and our amusement.

Enter the protagonist of our story, John Donovan, and his website royaldutchshellplc.com – Shell’s least favorite bookmark. Despite Shell’s best efforts, Donovan has been quite the busy bee, collecting a swarm of Shell-related secrets. The list of names he’s disclosed reads like a who’s who of corporate espionage, featuring the likes of James J.D. Hall (Shell’s very own top spy), Crockett Oaks III, Mike Oliveri, and Walied Shater. It’s like a spy convention, but with fewer martinis. read more

Shell’s appetite for espionage against John Donovan

Shell’s appetite for espionage against me knows no bounds, spanning a global spying operation that would make James Bond blush.

By Shell critic John Donovan

Step into the twisted world of Shell corporate malevolence, where no tactic is too underhanded. As Hugh Grant fights his legal battles, it triggers haunting memories of my own relentless crusade against the oil behemoth in the ’90s and its ruthless response.

I proudly wear the badge of Shell’s arch-nemesis, earned through sheer persistence in exposing their dark deeds. Brace yourself for a wild ride that spans three decades, where I confronted a seemingly invincible Goliath with bottomless pockets. Little did I know then that Shell would unleash a storm of threats and employ the covert arts, utilizing undercover agents like a devious spy network. An oily SPECTRE. read more

Shell prefers to ignore such trivial matters as the future of our planet

Posted 24 May 2023 by John Donovan

The activists stormed the meeting, shouting “Shut down Shell” as if their pleas for environmental responsibility could penetrate the thick walls of corporate greed.

Shell miraculously survives yet another feeble revolt from shareholders concerned about its “green strategy” and decides to continue its legacy of environmental destruction. As if that wasn’t enough, climate change protesters daringly stormed Shell’s annual meeting, disturbing the tranquil gathering of oil enthusiasts. read more
