Dutch gov’t, Shell and Exxon ignored Groningen risks for years, inquiry finds
AMSTERDAM, Feb 24 (Reuters) – The Dutch government and energy companies Shell (SHEL.L) and Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) ignored the risks of gas production in Groningen for years, to the detriment of people living in the province, a parliamentary inquiry concluded on Friday.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte and others involved “gravely underestimated” the urgency of the problems in Groningen, said the committee set up to investigate the decades of lucrative gas extraction that caused tremors damaging thousands of houses and buildings in the region.
The massive Groningen field is operated by Shell and Exxon joint venture NAM and was one of Europe’s major suppliers of natural gas for decades.
“These are hard and painful conclusions,” Rutte told a news conference. “They make clear there is a lot to do to help the region and to hopefully restore trust.”
The government will take time provide a full response to the report, he said without indicating how long that would take.
A statement from NAM director Johan Atema said: “It is clear that we need to have a better eye for the society in which we work. It is up to us to show that we as a company have learned from this.”read more

Absolutely terrible – random drop-outs, horrible speed, and I live alone, so maximum 1-2 devices using Wifi at any time. Their response: “Wifi isn’t guaranteed, we’ll send you a network cable” – how does that help for smartphones and tablets? Can’t wait to leave. Worst internet I’ve had in years. AVOID

AVOID, AVOID, AVoID! I’m on a fixed broadband contact but have just been told my bill is being increased from April, the contract is ‘FIXED’ but they are increasing the price only 2 months into an 18 months contract. Scam, a big scam and they won’t let me leave without paying £97.93. The service they provide is horrendous too, just checked the internet speed at 16:55pm and it’s upload 0.72 mbps. You read it right, “0.72”! Upload and 12.9 download. We had lower readings from them on different times/days.read more

When I agreed this contract it was for FIBER TO THE HOUSE.NO Virgin yet here but I had been very happy with it before. Hence I said it had to be right to the house. No problem sir our new ‘Fiber plus ‘ will give you that. 14 days to connect it. After several calls and issues I opened the little grey wall box outside —- NO fibre just old nasty copper!read more
Phoned up to tell them a move date. It was like I’d ask them to solve the meaning of life. Got transferred 7 times and then ended up back at he original South African call centre. They do not have a clue what they’re doing. Completely and utterly hopeless.

Shell took over my post office account. Having read other reviews I realise that I have been fortunate not to have had any problems with internet or phone. However I am only getting 20mps and I am pretty sure my PO contract was offering 35-ish.
However, Shell seem to be totally incapable of organising a direct debit and kept cutting me off. In the end I had to resort to paying online each month. At around £42 a month for “Superfast Broadband” and any time calls, it’s not a cheap option (not even fibre) and I am thankful that my contract is about to finish.read more

Shell cracker plant once again issued pollution violation notice
BY PATRICK DAMP: / CBS PITTSBURGH
INDUSTRY, Pa. (KDKA) – The Shell cracker plant in Beaver County has once again been issued a pollution violation notice.
This is the third time the state’s department of environmental protection has said the plant has exceeded emission limits, once again violating rolling 12-month standards in November and December.
The plant has only been operational since November.
The DEP said in November it emitted 716 tons of volatile organic compounds, 200 tons above what is allowed. read more
Phoned 1 week ago in regards to faulty gas meter and told new one installed 2 months away. New estimated bill is 5 times higher than highest usage on any month over last 12months. Phoned to query, transferred 6 times due to customer service not being able to transfer to relevant department. Promised an email confirming what we spoke of but nothing received and also customer service adviser refused to escalate call as she was clearly not understanding my enquiry. Shell demands compensation after Greenpeace action on oil platform
SUNDAY, 12 FEBRUARY 2023: Reporting by ANP and NL Times
Greenpeace said it has received a claim for damages from Shell over the occupation of an oil rig by activists from the environmental organization. The oil and gas company is demanding 100,000 pounds (113,000 euros), in part because Greenpeace activists placed solar panels and a wind turbine on the floating platform. The platform is on its way to the port of the Norwegian city of Haugesund.read more

Customer service is poor to non-existent. I am at the end of a 12 month contract with the same problem I reported at the beginning of the contract, that means 12 months of paying for a service that was shoddy and not supported. If you are considering Shell Broadband, I recommend you look again.

Since Shell took over from the Post Office my phone and broadband are nothing but trouble.
All my contacts have told me they are unable to get in touch.
1 – Weird noise on line,
2 – it may ring out and cut off,
3 – it crackles if working at all
4 – have tried several phones but the problem continues.
5 – my tech and phone works fine when tried at friends house
6 – customers service are trying to deal with Post Office customers and Shell customers
7 – They try to make you feel as if I’m the only one complaining
8 The service is not fit for purpose
9 – For any other purchase I am entitled to a replacement or refund. I feel Shell should refund all my payments since they took over from the Post Office.
10 – Shell service is so bad there have been radio programs of people complaining.
11 – Customer service people go through the same script each time I call and tell me there will be charge from OPENREACH if an engineer has to come out.read more
LONDON, Feb 9 (Reuters) – A group of European institutional investors is backing a novel London lawsuit against energy giant Shell’s (SHEL.L) board over alleged climate mismanagement in a case that could have far-reaching implications for how companies tackle emissions.
ClientEarth, an environmental law charity turned activist Shell investor, said it had filed a High Court claim on Wednesday, alleging Shell’s 11 directors have failed to manage the “material and foreseeable” risks posed to the company by climate change – and that they are breaking company law.read more

Shell’s Board Sued by Institutional Investors Over Lack of Climate Ambition
Shell Plc’s board faces a new front in climate litigation as a group of frustrated shareholders sue the oil giant’s directors in the UK.
Bloomberg News: Katharine Gemmell and William Mathis Published Feb 08, 2023
(Bloomberg) — Shell Plc’s board faces a new front in climate litigation as a group of frustrated shareholders sue the oil giant’s directors in the UK.
Two years after a Dutch court ordered Shell to slash its emissions, the group of investors are filing the first lawsuit of its kind against 11 members of the board, accusing them of failing to manage the company’s climate risks.read more

Amsterdam, Netherlands –Shell has attempted to silence Greenpeace International’s peaceful occupation of its oil and gas platform at sea, by hitting the campaign group with an injunction late on Friday, February 3, threatening up to two years’ jail time and fines.[1]
But today, Shell’s heavy-handed legal tactics failed, as Greenpeace International successfully went ahead with plans to escalate its protest by adding two more climbers to occupy the company’s oil and gas platform – using other boats unaffected by the court order.
Protestors are demanding that the company stops expanding oil and gas production around the world, takes responsibility for fuelling the climate crisis, and pays up for the climate destruction it is causing everywhere.
At around 9am (CET) in the Channel, the Greenpeace France-chartered Merida trimaran and two small boats approached the White Marlin heavy-lift vessel, which is carrying Shell’s 34,000 tonne oil and gas platform to the North Sea.read more
Vast profits for BP and Shell have put them in the frontline of a battle over the winners and losers from the energy crisis.
Extension of the windfall tax is seen by the industry as a way of discouraging further investment.
Some would prefer to see that discouraged and are dismayed as BP increases spend, while others want taxes to target benefits to shareholders.
BP and Shell get the attention because they’re big, public brands based in Britain. They’re not the only ones making vast amounts of money.
US firm ExxonMobil reported a profit of $56bn (£47bn) for last year. Chevron, also in the US, reported $36bn (£30bn).
Shell had profits of $40bn (£32bn) and BP has weighed in at $28bn (£23bn). All of them have more than doubled profits as the invasion of Ukraine and sanctions on Russia roiled the world’s energy markets.
Equinor (formerly Statoil), based in Norway and the largest supplier of gas to the UK and European Union after Russian gas flow was cut sharply, announced on Wednesday its net profit for the year was $28.7bn (£24bn), up from $8.6bn (£7bn) in 2021. Adjusted operating profits – before tax and removing one-off items – came to $75bn (£62bn).read more

Environmental groups plan to sue Shell’s new Pennsylvania plant over emissions
8 Feb 2023
Two environmental groups announced on Feb. 2, 2023 that they plan to sue Shell Chemical Appalachia over air pollution, just about three months after the startup of operations of Shell’s 1.6-million tonnes per year facility with capacity of polyethylene production, and related ethane cracker in Pennsylvania.
The Environmental Integrity Project said in a press release that along with another environmental group named Clean Air Council it filed “a notice of intent to sue (…) for repeated violations of air pollution limits,” it said.read more
