Dispute stops cargoes at Shell’s huge floating LNG plant
Angela Macdonald-Smith: Senior resources writer
Updated Jun 28, 2022 – 10.36pm, first published at 9.22pm
Shell’s monster floating LNG project off the north-west coast has cancelled cargoes until at least mid-July amid an escalating industrial dispute, tightening the supply of gas in the already-stretched global market.
Trade unions represented through the Offshore Alliance say Shell has threatened union negotiators with its intention to shut down the facility amid the deteriorating situation.
Australian Workers’ Union national secretary Daniel Walton described the threat as “insane” given the national gas crisis, and said the energy major was trying to bully the nation into agreeing to its “hardline” demands.
However the energy multinational insists it is union bans that are behind the likely shutdown, restricting its ability to operate the complex facility and offload cargoes. Prelude supplies LNG to the export market, not to Australian energy users.
A Shell spokeswoman said the group has notified customers that it is cancelling cargoes until at least the middle of next month due to the impact of the industrial action.
The dispute centres around a new collective agreement under negotiation between Shell and the unions, for workers that industry sources say are paid an average of $250,000-$280,000, and in some cases more through bonuses, allowances and overtime.read more

Was switched to shell when previous company went bust. shell by far are the worst company I have ever delt with. 2 visits to fit a smart meter. Sending me a letter saying they have to increase my direct debit to over £400 a month way UNDER my usage.as I will not pay a ridiculous amount each month I cancelled the direct debit and simply pay each month for actual energy used not a penny more not a penny left. Shell have marked my credit file a month in arrears.but not updated it for over 3 months. Customer service is awful they simply too big to care as soon as I am able to switch I will be leaving my money be better spent elsewhereread more

After they wanted to increase my monthly payment from £31 to £43 I decided to finish I was ask to return my Router in the pre payed bag at the post office & I got a recipe with a tracking number & a few days later it was delivered. But I received 2 emails saying I hadn’t returned it, I said you are wrong & gave them the tracking number & it’s taken 2 weeks to admit I was right. I did stop my direct debit otherwise they would have taken £30. I’m now with NOW TV at £21 a month & twice the Broadland speed.read more
Excellent “non” service from Shell Energy.Have been trying customer number all day to speak to their broadband section. I keep on getting “due to unforeseen circumstances “ messages advising us to phone later. This is not acceptable trying to deal with a company that doesn’t have a contingency plan set up. Poor show and cheerio as I will be voting with my feet.read more

I find it ironic that Shell Energy has branched into telecoms as they are utterly hopeless in terms of communication. Long waiting times on the phone (30+ minutes is not unusual), listening to elevator music and some chap telling you how important your call is and that someone will be with you soon (I would like to know SE’s definitions of important and soon); e-mails that go unanswered apart from an automated response: a webchat facility which is not available at 11.30 am (too early? too late?); an over-reliance on Facebook and Twitter which is absolutely no use to someone with no broadband or someone who is not interested in social media; letters which take 10-14 days to arrive based on the date at the top of the letter (snail mail?). Communication is definitely NOT SE’s forte.read more

Shell plans to expand amid energy market chaos
The FTSE 100 company plans to invest £20bn-£25bn in the UK
By Rachel Millard: 13 June 2022 • 7:27pm
Shell is pursuing a significant expansion of its business supplying electricity to UK households amid intense volatility in energy markets.
The FTSE 100 company wants to supply clean power to five million households and electric car drivers by 2030, up from about 1.5m today, as part of plans to diversify away from oil and gas.
Shell plans to invest £20bn-£25bn in the UK over the decade, more than 75pc of which will go towards low carbon energy such as wind turbines and electric car charging points.read more

Beware this company is sending out demands for monthly payments in my case over 500% above what I am actually using. Have complained to them and the answer is the computer does the calculations !. At first level by phone employee looked at my account and agreed demands were excessive. When complaint escalated is when informed they go by computer calculations and sent deadlock letter with an offer of £50 to close complaint !. Will have to see now what the ombudsman says.read more
Shell is running its $23 billion Prelude floating LNG plant with critical positions filled by crew who are not fully qualified, and more than 200 safety alarms out of action, ahead of industrial action due to start on Friday.
Gas exports recommenced from the world’s largest floating vessel just two months ago after it was shut down for four months following a complete power failure in December that the offshore safety regulator said could have led to a “catastrophic failure”.read more
Avoid this company. Broadband and phone. I’m in contract. I’m a vulnerable disabled person on #ShellEnergyBroadband priority register living alone. I’ve been without phone line and internet access since yesterday. I’ve missed an important telephone medical appointment scheduled for this morning. I don’t use a mobile phone. I’m sat on the pavement using my neighbours WiFi. Both myself and my son (who lives 2 hours away) have made disproportionate attempts to put #ShellEnergyBroadband faults on their radar. SHELL could be close to losing large sums of money from a protected industrial action onboard its Prelude floating LNG vessel from 7am tomorrow when all non-essential staff down tools and refuse to load cargoes.
Australia’s Fair Work Commission has approved the action as unions hammer out a new enterprise bargaining agreement with Shell. The protected industrial action runs until June 21.
The 3.6 million tonne vessel sold four cargoes through May and has varied contracts including with Korea’s Kogas. Other cargoes go into Shell’s wider LNG portfolio. This comes as the global gas market tightens amid far higher demand for LNG from Europe as it tries to swiftly pivot from Russian pipe gas.read more
THE union representing offshore oil and gas workers at Shell Australia’s Prelude FLNG facility have outlined serious safety concerns to the safety regulator, warning employees’ lives are at stake because fire suppression systems are not working.
The Offshore Alliance – part of the Australian Workers Union and Maritime Union of Australia – lodged the complaint yesterday which revealed that over 200 smoke detectors on the facility were not relaying to the control room and workers would not be aware of an explosion or fire at the giant floating gas project.read more

The instruction given by him in the covertly recorded call to CFO Simon Henry was at odds with Shell’s claimed core business principles.
